MINIMUM WAGE/REPUBLICAN ALTERNATIVE.
A Republican alternative to the Kennedy minimum wage amendment was also offered to the Defense Authorization bill. Proposed by Sen. Michael Enzi (R-Wyo.), the so-called alternative would hurt far more workers than it would help by eliminating or weakening minimum wage and overtime protections for millions of workers, while raising the minimum wage by only $1.10. The Enzi amendment would allow employers to cut workers’ overtime pay by as much as $3,000 every year by substituting an 80-hour work period for the traditional 40-hour workweek. The amendment also would allow employers to cut wages by as much as $5.50 an hour for tipped workers by nullifying wage protections under state law. In addition, the amendment would strip minimum wage and overtime eligibility from more than 7 million employees working at businesses with less than $1 million in annual revenue, far more workers than would benefit from a meager $1.10 increase in the minimum wage. The Enzi amendment failed.
