Minimum Wage/Science, State, Justice, Commerce Appropriations.
In their attempt to block legislation to raise the minimum wage from $5.15 an hour to $7.25, Republican House leaders have engaged in a series of parliamentary maneuvers. After Republicans blocked the fiscal year 2007 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education appropriations bill from a vote because it contained a minimum wage amendment, Democrats moved to offer the wage provision to the Science, State, Justice and Commerce appropriations bill (H.R. 5672). But under a debate rule proposed by Republican leaders, the amendment would not be protected. A move to defeat the rule in order to get a vote on the minimum wage amendment failed.
