Toxics Release Inventory.

By making toxic pollution information publicly available, the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) has become one of the premier tools for alerting U.S. citizens to chemical contamination in and around their communities. In 2005, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed weakening this program by raising reporting thresholds tenfold, potentially allowing large industrial facilities to release 5,000 pounds of toxic pollution before reporting them. The EPA also proposed allowing companies to withhold information on dangerous chemicals like lead and mercury and to report their pollution releases every two years, instead of annually. During debate of the Interior-Environment appropriations bill, Representatives Frank Pallone (D-NJ) and Hilda Solis (D-CA) introduced an amendment to prevent EPA from moving forward with these proposals. House Amendment 844.

Toxics Release Inventory.

H.R. 5386—The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed regulations that would drastically reduce reporting requirements under the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program. The TRI is critically important to help residents and workers identify the nature and extent of toxic chemical releases in their communities and workplaces. An amendment to the Interior Appropriations bill (H.R. 5386) that would prohibit the EPA from rolling back requirements for reporting toxic pollution under the TRI passed.

National Federation of Independent Business

Toxics Release inventory Amendment to Fiscal Year 2007 Interior and Environment Appropriations Bill.

Sponsored by Reps. Frank Pallone, D-N.J. and Hilda Solis D-Calif., this amendment would halt the current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rulemaking process for the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) program. The goal of the rulemaking process is to lessen the reporting burden on a small business under the TRI program while continuing to maintain the availability of public information.

BIPAC

H.R.5386, On Agreeing to the Amendment.
