Limits on Political Speech.

The House of Representatives narrowly passed the 527 Reform Act of 2006. This legislation would limit the amount of contributions to organizations organized under section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code, thereby inhibiting their issue advocacy and voter participation activities. This group opposed this legislation as an unwarranted intrusion into free speech guarantees protected by the First Amendment.

Public Citizen Congress Watch

Closing the campaign finance loophole for 527 groups.

Passage of a bill to subject Section 527 political organizations to the same campaign finance limits and disclosure requirements that apply to all other political action committees, with the Federal Election Commission setting rules for how 527s can allocate funding between federal campaign activity and nonfederal activity.

American Conservative Union

527 Reform Act.

The House passed H.R. 513, to amend the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 to clarify when organizations described in section 527 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 must register as political committees after agreeing to order the previous question without objection.

Americans for Democratic Action

HR 513. Campaign Finance Revisions.

Passage of a bill to require "527 groups" to comply with the same disclosure requirements and campaign finance laws that apply to political parties and political action committees, requiring them to report to the Federal Election Commission and allow the FEC to set rules for how 527s can allocate their funding. It would remove limits on the amounts parties can spend in coordination with their own candidates, exempting groups with annual gross receipts of less than $25,000, or that are organized solely for state or local elections and have not raised money in the previous year.

The Club for Growth

Restrict Nonproft 527's Free Speech.

Vote on passage of a bill that would force "527" groups to comply with tighter campaign finance restrictions. This bill violates fundamental political free speech rights guaranteed by the 1st Amendment.  This bill passed.
