LOBBYING REFORM.

Responding to the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal, the Senate passed legislation to ban gifts from registered lobbyists and limit lavish congressional trips and travel paid for by lobbyists. The bill also would require more disclosure of corporate-funded “grassroots” lobbying campaigns that are actually front groups for business interests. Federal records show that corporations outspend labor by nearly 50 to 1 for lobbying activities. This group urged the Senate to further tighten lobbying rules by banning the use of corporate jets for congressional travel and establishing an independent Office of Public Integrity to monitor and enforce compliance with the new restrictions. Those provisions were not included in the bill, which was passed.
