The Senate rejected an amendment offered by Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) that would cover the cost of any legislation that would stop Congress from borrowing from the Social Security trust fund to pay for other government programs.

Senator DeMint, R-SC, introduced an amendment to the budget resolution that would use current Social Security surpluses to create private accounts. The current surpluses are designed to pay for the benefits of the increasing number of retiring baby boomers. The amendment would increase the federal debt by more than $700 billion over ten years. The amendment failed.
