The amendment would allow education program cuts to be restored and also allow an increase in the maximum Pell Grant award to $4,500. The added expenditure would be offset by ending certain corporate tax breaks.

Student Aid and Job Training Budget Amendment.

Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME), Edward Kennedy (D-MA), and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) proposed an amendment to the FY07 budget resolution to restore funding for vital education programs such as TRIO and GEAR UP college prep programs and Perkins Loans, increase the Pell Grant from $4,050 to $4,150, and restore funding to other student aid programs slashed in the Bush administration’s budget proposal.

The amendment was designed to increase investment in student aid programs and restore cuts slated for job training programs by closing corporate tax loopholes worth $6.3 billion. While this groups members and supporters sent thousands of messages urging their senators to support this amendment, it failed by a narrow margin.

Senators Edward Kennedy (D-MA), Susan Collins (R-ME) and Robert Menendez (D-NJ) offered an amendment to increase funding in the fiscal year 2007 federal budget plan by $6.3 billion to restore funding for education programs and to increase the maximum amount of a Pell Grant offset by the elimination of selected corporate tax cuts.

This amendment would have ensured many educational opportunities by restoring funding for elementary and secondary education and increasing investments in student aid programs to help youth pursue higher education. The Senate’s rejection of this amendment hurt children.
