Eliminate Funds for Vulcan Monument.

When a 50-foot statue of Vulcan God of Fire and Iron in Birmingham, Alabama was looking a little rough around the edges, Alabama turned to the federal government to shell out dollars for restoration. After receiving $1.5 million in the fiscal year 2001 budget for refurbishment, Alabama returned for an additional $2 million in the fiscal 2002 budget.

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) offered an amendment stripping this $2 million in funding from the Department of the Interior and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2002, questioning why federal dollars should pay for a face-lift of a Roman god statue in Alabama.

The Senate rejected the McCain amendment.
