VA/HUD Appropriations.

Amendment that would increase by $195 million Section 8 assistance to fund 34,000 more incremental housing vouchers and by $5 million VA state grants for additional extended-care facilities construction. It would reduce by $200 million the Downpayment Assistance Initiative.

This amendment would increase the number of housing vouchers available to low-income families with children, who face serious difficulties finding affordable housing. More than three and a half million children live in households with “worst case” housing needs. The Section 8 program provides vouchers to help low income families pay their rent. The Act to Leave No Child Behind (H.R. 1990/S. 940) would provide one million new Section 8 vouchers for low income families over the next ten years and this amendment would have added 34,000 vouchers for FY 2002.
