Vietnam Jackson-Vanik Waiver.
In a significant victory for American businesses and workers, the House rejected a resolution to overturn the President's annual "Jackson-Vanik" waiver for Vietnam, 91-324, laying the groundwork for subsequent passage of a bilateral trade agreement with Vietnam. The Vietnam Jackson-Vanik waiver permits U.S. agencies involved in trade promotion, export assistance, and investment development to help U.S. businesses and their workers export U.S. goods and services to Vietnam. This measure helps American companies compete with foreign exporters and also paves the way for normalized trade relations with Vietnam, granting greater opportunities for U.S. businesses and farmers. Currently, trade with Vietnam supports thousands of American jobs and benefits American consumers. With a population of over 80 million people, Vietnam represents a promising market for American businesses. The U.S. Chamber strongly supports trade expansion and opposed H.J. Res. 55, which would have overturned the Jackson-Vanik waiver.
