Senate Kills Attempt to Boost Contribution Limits for Wealthy Individuals.

During consideration of the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill, Senator Hagel (R - Neb.) offered a substitute proposal that would have drastically increased the amounts that wealthy individuals may contribute to federal candidates from $1,000 to $3,000 per election. The UAW strongly opposed this amendment because we believed it would tilt the electoral process even more in favor of the rich. In the end the Senate tabled (i.e. killed) the Hagel amendment.
