Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Sponsored by Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (H.R. 1) would roll back the Johnson Amendment, increase the Child Tax Credit, eliminate numerous marriage penalties from the tax code, repeal the death tax, and allow unborn children to qualify for 529 education savings accounts.

NARAL Pro-Choice America

Granting Legal Rights to a Pregnancy (“Personhood”).

Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, H.R.1. Final Passage. A bill to overhaul the tax system which grants separate legal rights to a pregnancy, laying the legal groundwork to ban abortion outright. (Some anti-choice lawmakers cast what appear to be pro-choice votes; most observers recognize that those votes were cast for reasons unrelated to reproductive health.) Passed.

National Federation of Independent Business

H.R. 1 On Passage -- Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

This group supported this bill.

National Catholic Social Justice Lobby

Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (House Version) (H.R.1).

This group opposed this bill which would result in wide-reaching, regressive changes to the tax code by adopting provisions that largely benefit corporations and the highest-income households while offering little to no relief to middle and lower-income households. It also adds $1.5 trillion to the deficit over 10 years. Passed.

Citizens Against Government Waste

Tax Overhaul -- Passage.

Passage of the bill that would revise the federal income tax system by: lowering individual and corporate tax rates; consolidating the current seven tax income rates into four rates; eliminating the deduction for state and local income taxes; limiting certain deductions for property taxes and home mortgages; and creating a new system of taxing U.S. corporations with foreign subsidiaries. Specifically, it would eliminate personal exemptions and would nearly double the standard deduction. It would raise the child tax credit through 2022, repeal the alternative minimum tax, repeal the estate tax in 2025 and reduce the gift tax rate in 2025. It would establish a new top tax rate for pass-through business income and would modify tax credits related to energy production.

Alliance for Retired Americans

End Medical Deductions.

Representative Brady, R-TX, introduced legislation that gives tax cuts to corporations and wealthy Americans. The tax cuts are to be partially paid for by eliminating key tax deductions, including for medical expense. This deduction primarily benefits middle-income Americans, including seniors who itemize their taxes. The vote passed. H.R. 1.
