| Immigration: Senate amendment vote to use stimulus money to further militarize our borders (Kyl amendment). |
This amendment, introduced by Sen. Kyl (R-Ariz.) would have cut $200 million from Recovery Act funds. This money currently is allocated to provide jobs and boost our economy. Instead, the amendment would have diverted it to increase funds for a much abused program at the Southern border that mandates federal criminal prosecution of people charged with minor, nonviolent acts such as improper entry into the United States. Operation Streamline has diverted already scarce federal law enforcement and judicial resources away from prosecuting violent crimes such as drug trafficking and organized crime, and has forced federal prosecutors and defenders to expend precious time and resources on misdemeanor illegal entry cases. It failed.
