The Senate defeated an amendment eliminating the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and lowering the debt ceiling by the amount of TARP funds repaid.

THUNE AMENDMENT (H.J. RES.45: DEBT LIMIT INCREASE—TARP ELIMINATION).
The amendment offered by Sen. John Thune (S.D.). The amendment would have ended the Treasury Asset Relief Program and used any unused TARP funds to reduce the federal debt. The amendment failed.

H J Res 45: Debt Limit Increase - TARP Elimination.
Thune R-S.D. amendment no. 3301 to the Baucus D-Mont. substitute amendment no. 3299. The Thune amendment would terminate the Troubled Asset Relief Program and require that the debt ceiling increase in the resolution be reduced by the amount of TARP funds that are repaid after the date of enactment. The substitute would increase the statutory debt limit to $14.29 trillion.
