The Humane Society of the United States
Bear Protection.
S. 1109, introduced by Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), would prohibit interstate and international shipment of bear viscera (gallbladders and bile) in order to halt the poaching of American bears for Asian medicines, cosmetics, and shampoos. Intense demand for bear viscera has severely endangered bear populations in Asia and put increasing pressure on bear population in this country, where some 40,000 bears are illegally poached every year.
