To include a "legislation info provider" such as an advocacy group in our Report Cards, we need to be able to obtain from the provider their position on legislation that Congress either voted on or that was introduced and has a number of official cosponsors on record.
- Year of the vote,
- Chamber of Congress voting (House or Senate),
- Roll call number of the vote,
- Provider's preferred vote (Y = Yea; N = Nay).
- Weight of the vote - 2 for votes considered more important then others, otherwise 1.
- Vote Title (20 words max.) to be re-printed in the Report Cards.
- Vote Description (200 words max.) also to be re-printed in the Report Cards.
REQUIRED DATA FOR COSPONSORED LEGISLATION
- Congress in which the legislation was introduced,
- Chamber of Congress in which the legislation was introduced (House or Senate).
- Legislation number (e.g. H.R. 232 or S.J.Res.253).
- Provider's preferred cosponsorship status (Y = cosponsored; N = not cosponsored).
- Weight of the cosponsorship - 2 for legislations considered very important, otherwise 1.
- Legislation Title (20 words max.) to be re-printed in the Report Cards.
- Legislation Description (200 words max.) also to be re-printed in the Report Cards.
The preferred way of delivering the above data to VIS is by entering it in the Position Report tool available in our Congressional Toolbox. This tool will generate a text file with the entered data. The text file then can be sent to VIS via e-mail. VIS Membership is not required if the Position Report tool is only used for data entry.
We can also extract the "required information" from a congressional scorecard published by the provider on the Internet or in hardcopy. The scorecard must include all data specified above. Especially, it must
- clearly state the provider's preferred position on each vote or cosponsored bill, AND
- give enough information about each vote to make it possible for us to determine the roll call number of the vote. This might include the vote date, outcome, and a description of the legislation that was voted on.
